From Dr Mathews Phosa, a prominent figure in the history of Mpumalanga and South Africa’s democratic transition, to Dr Esther Mahlangu, whose distinctive Ndebele art has taken Mpumalanga’s cultural heritage to audiences around the world, each of these icons has made a lasting contribution. Dr Rebecca Malope’s extraordinary gospel career, Ray Phiri’s influence on South African music, and Hugh Masekela’s internationally celebrated musical legacy each represent an important part of our country’s cultural story. #NgiyiMpumalanga Icons is about celebrating achievement, recognising heritage and remembering the people whose talent, creativity, leadership and contribution have helped shape who we are.
