Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has officially launched the Women in Research Initiative for Growth and Transformation, known as WRIGHT, to address barriers faced by women in research and strengthen their participation and leadership in the research and innovation sector.

The launch took place on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, with Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, delivering the keynote address under the theme, “Breaking Barriers: The Critical Role of Women in Driving Global Research Innovation.”

Established by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, with support from the Research Directorate, WRIGHT aims to create an enabling environment for women researchers, postgraduate students and postdoctoral research fellows to advance their academic and research careers.

The launch included MUT’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement, Professor Mncedisi Maphalala; Professor Kogieleum Naidoo, Deputy Director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA); and patent attorney Omphile Netshiozwi,
