Legendary Dr John Kani vividly tells his life story as only a storyteller can

Legendary storyteller Dr John Jahn Kani comically goes down memory lane into his theatre life and role in the struggle from apartheid to post democracy South Africa.
He shares his story through a roller coaster of emotions like only a legendary storyteller can: he "shows" instead of telling. One moment he's hilariously funny, and deadly serious the next.
We chat to him at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg where one theatre is named after him. He also shares his views on social issues such as gender-based violence.
From being arrested for acting in theatre during apartheid despite being award winning stars to telling political stories in post democratic South Africa.
In this almost one-and-a half-hour chat Kani keeps us intrigued about his storytelling life in apartheid and post apartheid life.
He celebrates his 80th birthday on August 30 and does not intend stopping writing plays anytime soon.
He is hosted by Sunday Times deputy editor Mike Siluma and the producer is Bulelani Nonyukela. Sunday Times · Facebook · Twitter

Explosive study exposes rooms for sex and cash at the University of KwaZulu-Natal campus residences

15 first-year female students in no holds barred recorded interviews with University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) researchers, implicated senior students, including some members of the student representative council (SRC) and the institution's department of student residence affairs (DSRA), whom they accused of treating them like "fresh meat".They spoke of coercion, especially when transactional sexual relations were resisted, in the" Fresh Meat: First year female students negotiating sexual violence on campus residences" study, published last month in the South African Journal of Higher Education. The study was conducted pre-Covid-19 to determine how young women experience and negotiate gender, sexuality and violence on campus residences.Female students, past and present, who were not part of the study and spoke on condition of anonymity to the Sunday Times, this week told how they witnessed their peers being coerced, experienced insinuations of sex to guarantee accommodation at campus residences by "connected" seniors, and were fleeced out of thousands of rands in a bid to secure rooms.
A student, who will graduate in coming weeks, said she paid R4000 to a student who claimed he was connected to SRC members who would secure her a room on campus in her first year but made off with her money. Sunday Times · Facebook · Twitter

PIC CEO Daniel Matjila talks alleged plot to remove him

"My removal would make state capture of the PIC easier," says Matjila in the interview.

The Public Investment Corporation (PIC) has deliberated on claims of alleged impropriety by its CEO Daniel Matjila and has found the allegations to be baseless.

There has been a swirl of rumour regarding alleged impropriety around Matjila.

Matjila has denied the charges, saying they were designed to hound him out of the management of the pensions of state employees.

The PIC manages nearly R2-trillion worth of public servants’ pensions and other public funds and invests in, and earns returns from, listed and unlisted entities. Sunday Times · Facebook · Twitter
