Natalie has recently and suddenly become a widow, losing her husband.He was admitted to the hospital for a severe stomach bug before his untimely death, with the funeral taking place on Wednesday.

Natalie is a stay at home mom, taking care of her 2 year old and 4 year old daughters. Her oldest daughter is suspected of having autism, but this needs to be confirmed by a specialist.

Their dad, Chris, was the sole breadwinner earning just under R6000 per month,working for a small business. A close knit family, they managed to get by on his earnings.

To ease the heartache of being without their beloved husband and father, and to help Natalie during this difficult time, the team at Hot Cares decided to assist by matching Chris's salary for 3 months. Emily shares her home with her daughter Dudu, but times have been hard, especially since Dudu only obtained employment very recently after looking for work for 9 months, enabling them to get back on their feet.

Nadia has requested for Hot Cares to help build a brick wall at the back of their stand. This would complete the boundary wall around their house and would improve security for them.

John worked at Kings School West Rand. His two children attended the school that he worked at, so they had the pleasure of being with or near Dad all day. A fun-loving and hands-on father and husband, John was the one who would fix things around the home and maintain the pool.

Jacqui has experienced some difficult moments since John's passing, one of which involved the electric gate that wouldn’t open because of load-shedding. She broke down in frustration at herself for not having paid attention to how John did or fixed things. The other thing that Jacqui had no idea how to fix or maintain was the pool.

Understandably Jacqui and her children are broken, and life doesn’t seem fair at this time. To provide a modicum of comfort Hot Cares would like to show some love to the family of a man who routinely went over and above the call of duty for his pupils.

Four and a half years ago Tayla’s dad, Ivan, was diagnosed with a rare disease called Sarcoidosis (an auto immune disease where your immune system starts attacking your organs and other parts of your body)and since then his condition has deteriorated, resulting in him needing medical

Her mother had also required some medical treatment during this period. Her younger sister had a really bad Cheerleading accident last year, resulting in a really bad head injury and her having epilepsy.

Times have been tough for the family, and 2 weeks ago they suffered some serious tyre problems on 1 of their vehicles, in addition the brake pads on this car is worn out, making the car unsafe to drive.

This family have been through enough hardship to last them a life time, they are very deserving of a helping hand. Hot Cares will be assisting Tayla's family with a car service, including new tyres, as well as grocery and household supplies to the combined value of R 14 000.

Hot Cares got in touch with the Living Link earlier this month to see if they could get involved in treating some of our beneficiaries for the Touching 100 Lives. Established in 2000, the Living Link is a training centre for young adults between the ages of 18 – 35 who have learning challenges or an intellectual disability.

Intending to develop independent living skills and above all work readiness skills, the completion of the course is also an opportunity for these young adults to enter the open labour market.

On completion of the course, Living Link places these young adults into some form of open labour market employment where they can become people who can reach for their hopes and dreams and participate in the mainstream of society. The Living Link seeks to break down the barriers that exist for people living with disabilities in our society.

The Living Link is not about sadness and pity. We at Hot Cares admire that you are an organisation that is about hope and making a difference, but we realise that you too, as an NPO may need a helping hand.

The Parkhurst premises doesn’t have a secure, functional way to verify people before they enter the premises so Hot Cares will be supplying and installing Security cameras and a screen for their main gate to ensure se-curity for students, staff and village residents.

We also understand that the municipality doesn’t often come to tend to the overgrowth in your neighbouring spruit which also poses a security threat, so Hot Cares will also donate an industrial lawn mower to cut the grass at The Living Link Village for a total value of R20 000!

Two years back Leon was diagnosed with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy); a rare condition whereby the nerve endings in the brain die and the body deteriorates in function.

Financially, it has been quite a struggle to get all the things he needs. Leon's family found him a second-hand wheelchair at a reasonable price and they’ve put handles in the shower; but things are happening slowly because they rely on a government pension, of which most goes to his medication at least R 1000 per month.

Right now, Leon’s specific need would be a LifeVac. It’s a suction-like device that fits over the mouth area and can extract any blockages in the throat that cause choking.

Hot Cares will be purchasing a LifeVac to assist Leon with choking on his saliva and will also help with medication for 3 months – total value R5000!

Initiated by Parishes within the Anglican Diocese of Johannesburg, Vuleka was established in response to the growing crisis in education in the region.

Mr Majola, the Principal, met with Hot Cares to tell us about two very hard working young girls, brimming with potential at his school and nominated them for educational, financial assistance.

Blessing Kalenga is a Grade 1 pupil at Vuleka. Since her fathers passing, Blessing's mother does her best to bring in an income to support Blessing and her three siblings by making bags and selling them at flea markets The family sometimes receives support from St Marks Church.

A bright and eager pupil, Blessing is an enthusiastic and talented netball player too. Before the Vuleka sports day, Blessing approached the headmaster Mr Majola and asked for taxi money to attend the sports day, as she hadn’t any. Mr Majola and Mrs Naidoo, her class teacher, sponsored Blessing and her family to attend where Blessing scored about four goals.

Busi Cube is Grade 5 pupil whose sister also attends Vuleka School a grade above her. Vuyokazi, Busi’s mom, is a single parent who drives an old Corsa that she uses to transport three other children to get a small income to pay the fees. Vuyokazi has raised a beautiful, well mannered and diligent pupil in Busi who always smiles and is respected by her peers. Busi’s older sister was a top scholar in Grade 7 last year. Vuyokazi is blessed to have two very bright young girls.

However, in these trying times, Mr Majola says the parents of these two studious young girls aren’t able to keep up with the fees and would like to encourage these two students who show so much potential.

As is fitting of Mandela's beliefs regarding education as the foundation of a better generation, Hot Cares will pay the annual school fees for both Busi and Blessing to keep them on the right path. In Africa, the decision whether to buy a loaf of bread to satiate a grumbling stomach or a sanitary pad to manage a young girl’s period is commonly made amongst households struggling to survive. More often than not, the stomach wins.

In our more immediate community, a recent study of the Kya Sands Informal Settlement indicates that of the 5525 dwellings of which the minimum average is four people per dwelling, 70% of the women are unemployed, 60% of whom are single parents, meaning they cannot support their families.

Not only do the community not have access to nearby clinics for primary health care education, but the monthly cost of sanitary pads is also just too high, and the girls and women end up using newspaper, old rags or anything else available which often leads to infection.

In many cases, girls who start their menstrual cycles have no idea of what is happening, and instead of embracing their womanhood, they are often left frightened and feel a sense of shame.

Hot Cares has identified about 100 young women in the Kya Sands informal settlement to reach out to.

After having researched many options regarding cost-effective, sustainable menstrual health solutions for these ladies, Hot Cares found Dignity Dreams to be the ideal solution. Dignity Dreams manufacture and distribute sustainable, eco-friendly, washable pads to young girls and women. Each pack contains 6 washable pads, and one pad is equivalent to 144 disposable pads over the 48 month period they last.

Hot Cares has arranged a menstrual health care talk in the vernacular language of the ladies in the community. Each young lady will receive a lovely bag containing six washable pads (equivalent to 4 years of sanitary pads), Zip Lock Bag, Multi-Lingual Instruction sheet and some toiletries; giving them a completely sustainable solution to their monthly challenge for a total value of R16 000.

The life expectancy of Cerebral Palsy patients isn’t very high. Due to poor muscle tone and bone density, they usually pass around 40 years old.In an incredible demonstration of tenacity, at 66 years of age, Fiona remains mentally and physically strong, coping every day with little assistance.

She drives herself to work and back every day and uses a shopping trolley to get her around Northgate every day Medical professionals that have met her cannot believe how successfully she has survived 66 years and has never had to use a wheelchair. It’s unheard of!

Her struggle has now come that she is unable to afford her sessions with her Bio-Kineticist which is twice weekly.The medical aid won’t cover the essential sessions she requires being a Cerebral Palsy patient. Shannon and her husband help wherever they can financially, but it’s not enough.

This mom has been a fighter from birth and maintains such a joyful, positive attitude we would love to help her! Mae Heard, the Bio-Kineticist from NHC Medical and Dental Centre Bryanston is going to be giving Fiona free visits for the rest of the year.

• His colleague Alison nominated Don because they have a shared bond. Having a special needs child of her own, Alison knows the challenges that come with that and sent in a request to Hot Cares for assistance.

• Kagiso is Donalds 9yr old daughter who was diagnosed with Dandy-Walker Syndrome at birth. As part of her condition, she developed hy-drocephalus, (which is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain which causes increased pressure and size of the skull).

• Dandy-Walker Syndrome also affects brain development, primarily the part of the brain that co-ordinates movement among other things and as a result of her condition, Kagiso has global developmental delays. Physically she’s unable to stand or walk independently; she is also una-ble to support herself in an upright position.

• Hot Cares will be donating a side lyer positioning device designed to improve a child's postural alignment when spending time out of the wheelchair. It helps control severe muscle stiffness, spasms and uncon-trolled movements.

• It also allows for controlling the positions of the head to improve the child's ability to breath, swallow and socialise.

• Miriam, Kagiso's mum, struggles daily to get Kagiso around, and life would be much easier if she had her drivers license. She currently has her learners.

• In addition to a Domus 2 mattress which will assist Kagiso to get com-fortable sleep at night, Hot Cares will pay for driving lessons and license fee for Miriam to help with getting Kagiso around during the day. Like many animal shelters, keeping up with the constant influx of neglected animals is difficult. More so for a shelter like 4Paws which is smaller than most and doesn’t get as much attention; and therefore doesn't receive that much assistance. At the moment, the shelter has about 200 cats which they are struggling to feed.

Given Tammy's dedication to these animals, and her determination to help regardless of her own circumstance, Hot Cares will be donating cat food and supplies to the value of R2000.

Joyce is an informal trader and a single mom who earns a living by preparing fresh vetkoek to sell to the community on their way to work.

Joyce’s love for doing things for others touched the Hot Cares team when we saw how big her eyes got when she saw the fryer at the school tuck shop where she prepared 100’s of vetkoek for the children, and we couldn’t believe how many she could cook at once.

Their pro-grammes include daily nutrition centre for 401 primary school children, homework assistance classes, remedial Maths, English, Information Technology and Science classes and child psychology.

They have asked for assistance in building a greenhouse to house a vegetable garden. With the price of food continually increasing and donor sup-port declining as a result of our current economic situation, they are look-ing for an independent sustainable solution.

Besides the apparent nutritional value for the children, another advantage is that the food garden will also serve as an opportunity for the primary beneficiaries to learn about social responsibility through sustainable living.

Hot Cares will be donating the materials to them to construct their own Food Garden Green House.

Bernadette from Riverbend Steel reviewed the needs to build the green-house and has, as usual, given us the best advice as well as a discounted price.

Hot Cares will also provide the gardening tools, soil and soil nutrients as well as seedlings and supplies to get the garden growing.

During 2012 & 2014 she had two operations, and during the second one, Gynae discovered some damage making it hardly impossible to conceive. The saying "life begins at 40" was an understatement when Elvine found out she was pregnant.

Elvine has been unemployed for almost 3years and lost her house during this time and could no longer afford medical aid.

As a first time mother and with her medical history, Elvine is extremely stressed about the next few months and the health of her baby. After her first and only check up, she has been identified as high risk for certain conditions and would do anything to be able to do the necessary prenatal tests.

The medical tests are just over R12 000 with the specialist and the birth in a private hospital would be in the range of R45 000.

#HotCares will be covering the costs at Dr Nagar to the value of R11 000.

Including – Blood tests, Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing, as well as the Foetal Anomaly Scan with the specialist.

One nomination was from Nicky who came into contact with Marie when her friend had a stroke and became depressed. Nicky was moved by how much Marie does for those in her care, the hardships faced by the children and the adults before coming to Marie and witnessed the daily struggle Marie goes through to care for everyone.

Marie works with the local police station and takes in abandoned and abused children and currently houses about 15 children ranging in age from infant to 18 years. Marie also takes in disabled adults who have nowhere to turn. These adults, in turn, assist with helping to look after the children and around the home.

Marie’s Home for Abandoned Children is a registered NPO, but they have no formal fundraising and rely on word of mouth donations.

Amid their trying circumstances, every second year Marie still tries to take the children away on holiday and are trying to save to pay for a trip in December. They have put down a deposit and are hoping to raise R30 000 for the balance for a very special Christmas holiday for the kids.

Hot Cares would like to make this a reality and is donating R30 000 to pay for the holiday accommodation for Marie, Deon and the children.

Unfortunately, he did not receive timeous medical treatment but despite his disability he does not let this divert him from sharing his talent.
Moses lives with his wife Bertha who helps him in his business and his 5 year old daughter Mercy Ciera. Sadly just after Lexi interviewed Moses a few weeks ago, Moses’ 2 year old son, Bradley, drank rat poison at tragically passed away. The Fourways community were amazing in coming to them in the time of need and helped the family to pay for the funeral.
Moses has always had a very positive outlook in life and in 2009 he decided to change his life and to start his career as a tailor. It was during these initial years that he watched fellow seamstresses where he learnt and developed his love for toys. Toys bring a smile to people’s faces and he wants to share this happiness with the world.
He purchased some patterns, but they were very scarce, so he practiced making and perfecting patterns and the stitching thereof. He takes great pride in the quality of his toys. He uses fabric which is donated to him and purchases authentic African inspired fabrics to give true authenticity. All his toys have zips so the stuffing can be taken out for ease of washing. Toys have labels and washing instructions can be added where required.
His first toy was an Elephant followed by a Rhino and these continue to be the most popular toys to date. The range includes Monkey, Giraffe, Hippo, Crocodile and Lion. Some of the animals have been made into bags with beautiful lining. Moses is so talented that if there is a pattern, he will make your toy to order!
