In the heart of Johannesburg's Alexandra Township there is an oasis of hope for the hungry children of this poverty-stricken area. It's called Londani Loshaka (Caring for the Nation), a social welfare organisation started by three remarkable women, Irene Chauke, Mavis Rathogwa and Alice Modire who want to make a difference. Housed at the Thusong Youth Centre, they originally wanted to provide a counselling service for the people of Alex battling with socio-economic problems like HIV/AIDS, bereavement, divorce, unemployment, domestic abuse. But when Covid-19 struck, they could no longer offer their one-on-one counselling service. The women saw the desperate need to provide food for the children who came queuing at their gate every morning. So they started a feeding scheme. I went to visit them in May 2020.

The world closed down as Covid-19 swept the globe in early 2020. Most countries shut their borders, giving foreign nationals very little notice to get home. Many South Africans working or travelling as tourists in countries across Africa found themselves stranded with no way of getting home. Up stepped a small, daring airline called CemAir. Using a mixture of diplomatic negotiating skills, fearlessness, and an ability to make it up as they went along, CemAir's indomitable flight crews organised many repatriation flights as their aeroplane zig-zagged across Africa, rounding up the stray and grateful South Africans and bringing them home. In this episode, we recount a trip from Casablanca, down the African West Coast, through Central Africa and finally home.

On 7 September 1992 I was in Bisho, the capital of the Ciskei bantustan. I was covering what was thought to be an ANC protest march to demand the overthrow of Ciskei leader Oupa Gqozo. It turned into a massacre as Ciskei soldiers opened fire on the ANC marchers on the outskirts of the city. 33 people died and over 300 were wounded. I was recording a police helicopter seconds before the shooting started. I kept my recorder rolling as the gunfire ripped into the crowd. In this podcast, I take you through the recording explaining what was happening.
