Mastercard and Vinpro, a non-profit company representing close to 2,600 South African wine producers, cellars and industry stakeholders, have partnered to Start Something Priceless and boost domestic and international tourism to three major South African wine tourist destinations located in the heart of the Western Cape Province.

The partnership in collaboration with the South African tourism industry aims to provide Mastercard cardholders with an exclusive experience through a welcome of a picturesque terrace of mountains that the province has to offer, coupled with unique dining experiences at select restaurants, vineyard drives, top-class hotel accommodations, and a place of calm and dreams for travel enthusiasts waiting to delight their palates with different textures from the wine reserve selects, all this available to explore in Constantia, Franschhoek, and Stellenbosch.

The South African tourism industry has been adversely impacted by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in lockdown and travel restrictions. Start Something Priceless: Boosting South Africa’s Tourism!

This is How a Group of South African Women Started And Grew Their Own Business

To support the growth and development of women entrepreneurs and curb the high unemployment rate in South Africa, Mastercard funded two entrepreneurial development programmes in 2021 that have seen more than 180 young women gain entrepreneurial skills to start or grow their own businesses.

Facilitated by non-profit organisation Junior Achievement (JA) South Africa, the programmes combined market-relevant skills training, mentorship, and access to micro-finance to help young women better their lives, transition to sustainable livelihoods, and play an enlarged role in South Africa’s economic recovery.

While South Africa’s unemployment rate increased to 34.9% in the third quarter of 2021, research shows that unemployment among women – particularly black women – remains continually higher than men. Over 96% of the women in this year’s programmes are young black females between the ages of 18 and 35. This is How a Group of South African Women Started And Grew Their Own Business

This Is How Mastercard Is Supporting Local Business in South Africa!

Mastercard has partnered with online payment gateway PayFast to launch a campaign that encourages South Africans to support local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by utilising e-commerce platforms.

This partnership between Mastercard and PayFast comes as SMEs are struggling to get back on their feet following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic which negatively impacted many small businesses due to the harsh lockdown regulations and travel restrictions disrupted trade and supply chains.

The SME sector employs 47% of South Africa’s workforce and contributes more than 20% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and pays about 6% of corporate taxes, a big economic contributor.

Launched in August, the two-month campaign aims to elevate the visibility of small businesses who use PayFast’s payment gateway and some of these businesses will be profiled on Mastercard’s experiential lifestyle hub, Priceless.com.

The campaign mechanics are simple, consumers who make an online purchase using their Mastercard, Masterpass app or any other Masterpass-enabled banking app at a PayFast merchant before 30 September 2021 will stand a chance to win one of nine R100 000 weekly shopping vouchers to spend at any PayFast merchant. This Is How Mastercard Is Supporting Local Business in South Africa!

This Is How Mastercard Is Committing to Gender Equality… And Women’s Rugby In SA!

Mastercard has been a long-standing advocate of diversity, inclusion and partnerships aimed at promoting good governance and integrity for women. This is part of the company’s commitment to harness the power of its brand and footprint to remove obstacles that impede women from achieving their full potential and to drive gender equity.

This month, as we honour and celebrate women Mastercard shares inspiring stories of four remarkable, selfless, fearless, and limitless South African women from different corners of the country now living out their dreams. The Mastercard ‘She Is’ campaign spotlights women from a variety of professions and demonstrates to viewers—regardless of age or gender—that there are no limits to what is achievable.

The issue of gender inequality has been brought sharply into the spotlight as South Africa celebrates women’s month in August. Gender disparity manifests itself in many forms, including disproportionate investment in women sport. South African women rugby is a case in point. Women’s rugby is the world’s fastest-growing sport, however, this sporting code has been lingering under the shadow of men’s rugby in terms of the value of sponsorship it attracts and television coverage. This Is How Mastercard Is Committing to Gender Equality… And Women’s Rugby In SA!

Today, people are rethinking their relationship with nature. As the effects of climate change ravage many parts of the world and we experience some of the most extreme weather events on record, we must urgently think of innovative ways to inspire collective action to address climate change.

The latest sustainability research commissioned by Mastercard has shown a marked increase in consumer passion for the environment, as personal attitudes toward the environment evolve.

The study revealed that 98% of adults in South Africa are willing to take personal action on sustainability issues.

In light of this and ahead of World Environmental Day on 5 June, Mark Elliott, Division President of Mastercard South Africa and Peter Ndunda, Kenya Country Lead at Global Restoration Initiative, joined Brent Lindeque on Good Things Guy to discuss the Mastercard Priceless Coalition and sustainability efforts in being a force for good.
