“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”[a]

So this is what the soldiers did.

1Toe koning Dawid in sy eie huis woon, nadat die Here hom rus gegee het van al sy vyande in die omgewing, 2sê hy vir die profeet Natan: “Kyk, ek woon in 'n huis wat met sederhout versier is, maar die ark van God staan in 'n tent.”
3Natan het die koning geantwoord: “Doen gerus alles wat u in gedagte het. Die Here is by u.”
4Dieselfde nag het daar egter iets gebeur: die woord van die Here het tot Natan gekom en vir hom gesê: 5“Gaan sê vir my dienaar Dawid: So sê die Here: Wil jy vir My 'n huis bou om in te woon? 6Vandat Ek die Israeliete uit Egipte laat trek het tot nou toe het Ek nog nooit in 'n huis gewoon nie. Ek het in tent en tabernakel rondgeswerf 7saam met al die Israeliete. Het Ek ooit vir een van die stamme wat Ek beveel het om die leiding van my volk Israel op hom te neem, gesê: ‘Waarom bou julle nie vir My 'n huis wat met sederhout versier is nie?’
8“Nou moet jy vir my dienaar Dawid sê: So sê die Here die Almagtige: Ek het jou uit die weiveld agter die kleinvee weggevat om oor my volk Israel te heers. 9Oral waar jy gegaan het, was Ek by jou; al jou vyande het Ek voor jou oë uitgedelg. Ek het jou so beroemd gemaak soos die grotes op die aarde. 10Ek het 'n woonplek aan my volk Israel gegee en hom gevestig, sodat hy sonder vrees in sy plek kan woon. Slegte mense sal hom nie meer verdruk soos voorheen 11toe Ek leiers oor my volk Israel aangestel het nie. Ek sal jou rus gee van al jou vyande. Ek maak aan jou bekend dat Ek vir jou 'n koningshuis gaan vestig. 12Wanneer jy te sterwe kom en jy by jou voorvaders rus, sal Ek een van jou nageslag, jou eie seun, koning maak en aan hom 'n bestendige koningskap gee. 13Hy sal vir my Naam 'n huis bou, en Ek sal sy koningskap vir altyd laat voortbestaan. 14Ek sal vir hom 'n vader wees en hy sal vir My 'n seun wees. As hy ontrou is, sal Ek mense gebruik om hom te straf, hom te kasty. 15Maar my trou sal Ek nie aan hom onttrek soos Ek dit aan Saul onttrek het om vir jou plek te maak nie. 16Jou koningshuis en jou koningskap sal vir altyd vas staan; jou troon sal altyd voortbestaan.”
17Volgens hierdie openbaring het Natan die hele boodskap aan Dawid oorgedra.
18Daarna het koning Dawid ingegaan en voor die Here gaan sit en gesê: “Wie is ek, Here my God, en wie is my nageslag dat U my só ver gebring het? 19Selfs dít was vir U nog nie genoeg nie, Here: U het ook nog vir die nageslag van u dienaar tot in die verre toekoms beloftes gemaak. Wat 'n toesegging aan 'n mens, Here my God!
20“Wat sou ek, Dawid, nog verder vir U kon sê? U ken immers u dienaar, Here. 21U het hierdie groot ding gedoen omdat dit u besluit en wil was en boonop het U dit nog aan u dienaar bekend gemaak. 22Daarom, groot is U, Here my God! Daar is niemand soos U nie. Buiten U is daar geen God nie, van hoeveel gode ons ook al gehoor het. 23Watter volk is soos u volk Israel? Hulle is die een nasie op die aarde wat U vir U as volk vrygemaak het. U het u Naam bekend gemaak en in hierdie land aan nasies en hulle gode groot en vreeslike dinge gedoen ter wille van u volk wat U vir U uit Egipte vrygemaak het. 24U het u volk Israel vir U gevestig as 'n volk wat vir altyd aan U behoort. En U, Here, U het hulle God geword. 25En nou, Here God, bevestig tog vir altyd wat U oor u dienaar en sy nageslag gesê het. Doen tog soos U belowe het, 26sodat u Naam vir altyd groot kan wees as daar gesê word:
“ ‘Die Here, die Almagtige,
is God van Israel.’
“Laat die nageslag van u dienaar Dawid voor U voortbestaan. 27Here, Almagtige, God van Israel, U het nadruklik vir u dienaar gesê: ‘Ek sal vir jou 'n koningshuis vestig,’ en daarom het u dienaar die vrymoedigheid gehad om hierdie gebed tot U te rig.

Die hele wêreld het net een taal gepraat. Toe die mense ooswaarts getrek het, het hulle uitgekom by 'n vlakte in Sinar en daar gaan woon. Hulle het op 'n keer vir mekaar gesê: “Kom ons maak stene en ons brand hulle hard.”
Hulle het toe stene in plaas van klip gebruik en asfalt in plaas van klei.
Toe sê hulle: “Kom ons bou vir ons 'n stad met 'n toring waarvan die punt tot in die hemel reik en ons maak so vir ons 'n naam. Dan sal ons nie oor die hele aarde versprei nie.”
Die Here het afgekom om te kyk na die stad en die toring wat die mense vir hulle gebou het, en toe sê Hy: “Hier is hulle een volk en almal het een taal. Hulle het nog maar net begin om iets te doen. Hierna sal niks wat hulle beplan vir hulle onmoontlik wees nie. Kom laat Ons afgaan en verwarring bring in hulle taal, sodat die een nie die ander verstaan nie.”
Die Here het hulle toe van daar af verstrooi oor die hele aarde, en hulle het opgehou met die bou van die stad.
