Playing on the surname of my guest, “Ndlela” which is IsiZulu meaning a physical path, or the way you do something or a manner a person conducts themselves, their style or behaviour. Whichever meaning you ascribe her surname, Siphesihle, called Sihle for short, Penny Ndlela has her own unique, distinguishable way of moving through this Life.

Sihle originally hails from Empangeni, in Northern KwaZulu Natal, but grew up in eSikhawini in Richard’s Bay. Penny says #money has never been the driver for the ventures she pursues in business because it comes in abundance when you find purpose. Sihle is a serial #entrepreneur.

In the late 1990s she joined Lemon & Lime, a customised gifting company which evolved into an integrated communications and marketing #business. Penny bought out her partner in 2000 and later exited and sold the business in 2009. In 2013, Penny started Soul Traveller, a faith-based travelling experience for the black market in South Africa. It was her first #tourism venture and became a member of the #Thebe Tourism group first group #travel tour operator in South Africa focused on the domestic market.

Prince Mashele is a prominent #SouthAfrican political analyst, author, and commentator known for his critical and hard-hitting perspectives.

We can feel bombarded with numerous perspectives. This accumulation often leads to confusion, not clarity. Siza is a pioneer in aviation with over 25 years of aviation industry experience and expertise which has helped her scale to many heights, including being appointed as the first female onto the Board of Directors of the International Air Transport Association (#IATA) in its 70-year history. There are very few individuals that I have observed that carry these
contradictions with Grace and Wisdom. Lerato Molebatsi is a person that
epitomises that power doesn’t have to be loud and showy. Her character, her
mind and heart are what keep you in her life in the long-term.
Lerato is a former Managing Director of General Electric (#GE) South Africa.
She has over 25 years of experience in diverse sectors such as Financial
Services, Mining, Government, Non-profit and Professional Services. She

Reserve Bank (#SARB), as a Lead Independent Director and Chair of
NEDCOM and a non- executive on Adrian Group #Kenya, an engineering

Brig says her Achilles Heel is that she is very impatient. She expects results quickly. However, when I watch her foray into politics and the long journey, she knows is at hand for patriarchal societies to see the value #women can bring into leadership positions, I differ with her self-image. The issues she tackles set a foundation for an equal and equitable world such as mentoring programmes for women and now also working on the ambition to set up an Institute to formalise, dignify and train domestic workers in Ghana.

Even though she has strong views on issues, she is refreshingly an empathetic listener who is generous in recognising women who have mentored and inspired her life journey such as Ms Wendy Luhabe from South Africa. She quotes Shirley Chisholm, who was an American politician who became the first black woman elected to the United States Congress 1969 to 1983 who said, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair”. Oh, and Brigitte does do that.

Talking about identity, she reminded me of the derogatory, painful, and Soul-destroying term and song “Makwerekwere” that was used to describe African foreigners even in Botswana where she grew up.

Rehema is the Co-Founder of Womanomics Africa, who exist to connect women to opportunities and ecosystems, creating a Pan -African economic highway.

This is a fitting conversation to close off another difficult year in the grips of the #Covid pandemic. William Leach, former CEO of Saatchi and Saatchi Africa and co-founder of The Leach Partnership, Sydney, Australia has been one of the most significant and impactful teachers and mentors in my life with regards to Living, Leadership and Loving.

His leadership instincts and courage at a young age, late 20s and early 30s, had him accepting opportunities to establish a Saatchi advertising agency in Budapest, Hungary at the end of Communism in 1990 and to lead the transformation and growth of Saatchi & Saatchi Africa from the end of Apartheid in 1994.

This conversation has in its belly insightful wisdom of how leaders can lead transformation - whether of corporate cultures or business models, with diverse workforces without destroying value or creating toxic environments. Infact , actually inspiring incredible bottom line results. A lesson that many South African leaders could learn.

William is a humble, kind and loving human being in all ways that count. It is rare that a human being inspires me in all spheres of life - work, home and play. He does. I even think, "When I grow up.....😃😀😄😁".

I am proud to showcase a fellow proud South African who turns stereotypes on their heads and whose heart and mind are what I wish many of us would have to make this world better than we found it. She cannot understand why I selected her for this Wisdom Personified series. Her calmness is her strength. Her modesty intoxicating. Strength is not always loud. We don’t only learn from people that speak the loudest. On occasion, we must seek out those who exemplify extraordinary character in the mundaneness of life. Therein is hidden wisdom.
She bears out the quote by Jonathan Harnisch, "The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of the world, but those who fight and win battles that others do not know anything about".

I keep telling her I love her surname – Maluleke. I don’t care who sweeps her off her feet next. How charming he is. She must never change her surname again. 😂😂😂
Our Deputy-Auditor General, Tsakani Maluleke was inspired to join the Chartered Accounting profession to challenge the underlying unsaid stereotypes and to upset the stats that reflected a low number of African people not passing the final chartered accountancy exam the first time round. Don’t tell her she cannot do something. That provides fuel to her ambitions and impact.
Tsakani takes the Code of Professional Conduct for auditors to heart. Her passion and true appreciation of what it means to be a public servant inspires her ambition to facilitate the rebuilding of public confidence and trust in government and the auditing profession.
There are many more layers to peel off this inspirational woman. Be inspired by the first instalment of her Wisdom with the hope of much more to come from her in the future.

The positioning of my life is: I may not be perfect, but I am always me: Dudu Msomi.

I was introduced to Rule Number 6 which is ‘Don’t take yourself so g—damn seriously' early in my working life.

It has really inspired a life journey of a lighter heart in the midst of a life that is characterised by a non-stop active mind and busy schedule that I thoroughly love and are honoured to live.

In not taking myself too seriously, I do take my identities that I choose to answer to: being an African and Dudu Msomi, very seriously. I strive to live my mission to exude and have authentic understanding and to leave the world a little better than I found it.

I have an insatiable hunger for knowledge and I tirelessly seek ways to nourish my curiosity and love of learning. I enjoy learning not just from books, institutions and media, but from the experiences of others. And then to be a conduit for other people who have interest, to also be able to benefit from the minds and knowledge that I have access to.

I must confess. Facilitating knowledge acquisition and exchange is my Ecstatic spot. Wisdom Personified Conversations with Dudu Msomi is one channel for facilitating, together with the work I do in Busara Leadership Partners, the strategic advisory and consulting firm I founded in 2009.

I hope you enjoy this conversation. The wise learning I have gained in doing the Wisdom Personified series is captured in this quote by Roy T. Bennett, "It doesn't matter how many people you meet in your life; you just need the real ones who accept you for who you are and help you become who you should be". As I entered the working world in 1995, as an Account Executive at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising energised by the possibilites of the new South Africa, my university friend Musa E. Zulu was charting a new life following an accident that left him paralyzed and wheelchair bound.

After the shock at the turn of events and seeing how his essence had not changed after visiting him at his home, I knew, he will be more than alright.

Musa is 25 years in the wheelchair in 2020. He is the Creative Director of Valhalla Arts. An author of four books with his latest one called, "I Am Art: The 40th Anniversary Essay".
