One of the most common questions asked by students of the Bible concerns the relationship between Israel and the church. We read the Old Testament, and it is evident that most of it concerns the story of Israel. From Jacob to the exile, the people of God is Israel, and Israel is the people of God. Despite the constant sin of king and people leading to the judgment of exile, the prophets look beyond this judgment with hope to a time of restoration for Israel.

The address given by Dr Pieter Oldewage at the 2025 graduation ceremony of Auckland Park Theological Seminary.

I was raised in an atheistic home without any exposure to the Bible or church life. Six months after my conversion, I applied to this seminary to pursue training as a full-time pastor. My application posed challenges for the screening committee due to my complete lack of biblical and church knowledge. Ultimately, my acceptance came with a clear caution: I was instructed to remain silent in class, listen attentively, and learn, mindful that I would represent God in pastoral ministry.

Distance Education at ATS

At Auckland Park Theological Seminary, we use distance education for teaching and learning, which has many benefits. One main advantage is that students and lecturers can be in different places. This method also saves money because students don’t have to move or travel, making higher education available to more people from different backgrounds. Plus, distance learning offers flexible timetables, so students can manage their studies alongside personal and work responsibilities.

While distance education has many benefits, it also comes with some challenges. We are always working to make our teaching and learning better in this format.

Our approach combines different methods and uses the internet for support, but we mainly rely on printed materials like Reader, Study, and Assessment manuals. Online virtual classes let students and lecturers meet online, hear the lecturer’s explanation of the work, and ask questions. A few selected tests are done using online multiple-choice questions. Students must have internet access.

We enrol students twice a year, and everyone follows the same study plan.

Preaching is about bringing God’s undiluted Word to His people in such a manner that it changes their lives. Preaching should result in God’s church being informed people who love and understand the Bible, can think for themselves, and allow the Holy Spirit to work within them so that they can live by the Spirit. It is a “tall order”, but I am convinced that God does not expect anything less of us.
I think it is safe to say that neither the ANC nor the DA’s first choice was to enter into the GNU agreement. We have public statements that confirm this idea. I am pretty sure that each of them would have much preferred to have the majority vote so that they could govern South Africa on their own. But this privilege, the South African voter, did not give them.

As we leave the New Year’s festivities behind, we find ourselves facing a world that increasingly appears ‘crazy’ in many respects. The pace of change and its global scale are unprecedented in human history. Feeling overwhelmed by fear and anxiety is not an unreasonable reaction. From a rationalistic (relying solely on reason and knowledge) and mechanistic (viewing issues purely in physical terms) worldview, humanity seems to be in trouble. To borrow a Biblical metaphor, rationally it seems that “our boat is going to sink in the storm.”
The cost of tertiary education is substantial, and parents are understandably eager to ensure their children are well-prepared for the future. To these young people, parents and grandparents, I would like to offer a different perspective for consideration.
I'll discuss:
- Developing Cognitive Ability and Critical Thinking
- The Future of Work is Uncertain
- Working with People Will Always Matter
- Preparation for the Future
- Marketplace Ministry

Most of us have a few pivotal moments that change the course of our lives: metaphorically, when the "tectonic plates" break free and travel several kilometers in just a few seconds. For me it happened years ago, when as an undergraduate student, I heard of a seminar on the Second Coming of Jesus (eschatology - the science of the last things) at Auckland Park Theological Seminary. I was studying science at another university and the topic was far removed from my own studies. As a Christian however, I always knew that the ‘second coming’ or end times, installed fear in me. I decided that for once I was going to face this fear and attend the seminar.

To vote or not to vote…and who to vote for on the 29th of May 2024?

When I grew up it was often said that you should not talk about church or politics. I think it was a way to say that as Christians we should live in harmony and peace, and then it is best to stay clear of the two subjects that might stir up heated emotions. Today I think differently.

Dr Frans Cronje*, arguably one of our countries most solid researchers and political analysts, last week spoke about the South African landscape and where our country is heading in the context of the upcoming election. Dr Cronje has been doing research and analysis for more than 20 years and in the past has been able to make conclusions that eventually materialised, even though at the time it was greatly criticised. Thus, in the light of his track record, it might be of value that we take note of some elements of his analysis. I would like to mention a few comments from the interview with Dr Cronje.
They must experience the conversation and the content vividly so that they can understand and start to “live” the content. Paul wrote that he who speaks in a tongue builds himself (See 1 Cor. 14, 18). For example, they must experience the emotions that God’s greatness and love bring so that they can become strong, cheerful and wise.

Herlewing by die Sinoville Gemeente in Pretoria

Revival is an event that God himself creates through the working of the Holy Spirit and it is based on what Jesus has already done and still does. This is a core truth that we must first realise before we can believe and pursue it.

This article is about the experiences of Annakie and me in the AFM Sinoville congregation in Pretoria during the years 1972 to 1975. Maybe I should not talk about revival, because we did not pray for a revival at that time and never referred to it as a revival. And yet, when I think back today, I would say that I would not want or expect anything different from a revival or a revival in the making. At that time, we learned a lot from the Lord, that I trust will emerge in this article.
God wants his people to experience hope and to share it with the world: the hope that has world-transforming power and which God revealed the first Christmas morning. And like Joseph and Mary, God wants to use you!

Being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues (by Prof Jan Hattingh)

The question this article focusses on is: Is baptism with the Holy Spirit accompanied by speaking in tongues? A second question that necessarily accompanies the previous one is: what is the sense of speaking in tongues? The answer to these two questions may highlight the wonder and power of baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The question is not about: does the believer, who does not have the experience of speaking in tongues, have the Holy Spirit? By the very nature of what a believer is, all believers (they have accepted Jesus after all) have the Holy Spirit in their lives. From biblical perspective, there cannot be a person who has accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour without the working of the Holy Spirit in his life. How else would Jesus be present and active in his life? If a believer could be without the Holy Spirit, then it could also be asked whether a born-again person is without the first person in the Trinity, the Father? Indeed, it concerns the question of the triune God’s presence in a believer’s life. After all, we read: “… for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil his good purpose” (Phil. 2:13). The assumption is that in everything it is God who works through his Spirit in a born-again person.

BIG Change

BIG Change is a self-help, bottom-up strategy to change South Africa.

The strategy focuses on the Christian network that is interwoven with the fabric of the South African society. The Christian network is the biggest common denominator across South Africa’s diverse society. If you choose to look at South Africa in this way, then we are not such a diverse society after all. What if this is a largely unrecognised and therefore underutilised resource? What doors can it open for South Africa, if any?

To unpack BIG Change, we will answer three questions:
- WHY do we think BIG Change is such a good strategy?
- WHO will be the role players in BIG Change?
- HOW can BIG Change be implemented?
<itunes:summary>BIG Change is a self-help, bottom-up strategy to change South Africa.

The Holy Spirit in a challenging world (by Prof Jan Hattingh)

The aim of this essay is to help the reader to experience the working of the Holy Spirit in its fullness in this challenging world. The work of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life starts long before he or she experiences the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit as God the Creator in action, is constantly at work and sustains all creation and living beings.

This presentation will unfold as follows:

- We will first discuss the general working of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life.
- Thereafter, we will discuss the baptism in the Holy Spirit as a second experience after the new birth; the fulfilment of the promise made in Joel 2.
- Jesus was introduced as the Baptiser in the Holy Spirit. We will explore the meaning of the words used to describe the experience of the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
- The magnificent meaning of the working of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life will be discussed from Paul’s two prayers in Ephesians.
- We will look at an example of the working of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life in this challenging world – the fight in a broken world, so that God’s good purpose can be fulfilled (Rom. 8).
- The imperative to “live by the Spirit”.

This essay by Prof WJ Hattingh from Auckland Park Theological Seminary will unfold as follows:
- I will first discuss two serious misconceptions that hinder the understanding of the working of the Holy Spirit.
- Secondly, I will give a Biblical alternative of the Holy Spirit and His work, with examples from the Old Testament.
- Then we will shortly look at the magnificent promise made in Joel 2.
- I will discuss an important Hermeneutic key to guide our understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit.
- We will then briefly look at the working of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ ministry.
- We will especially give attention to Jesus’ visit to His disciples during the night after His resurrection and His command to them a few days before His ascension.
- In conclusion, I will present three truths we cannot disregard.
