Something Shifted with Sean Loots

There’s a moment where your life splits in two. Before, and after.
Before the diagnosis. Before the loss. Before everything changed.
And the life that came after, whether you were ready or not.
But who are you when the life you planned no longer fits?

Something Shifted is a podcast about lifequakes, identity after interruption, and the stories we tell ourselves after everything changes.

Hosted by South African broadcaster Sean Loots, the podcast shares raw, deeply human stories that don’t make the highlights reel.

In an almost documentary-style narrative, Something Shifted explores identity cracks, recalibration, and small but profound shifts that shape a new life. Alongside these conversations, Sean reflects on his own journey raising a child with special needs.

These aren’t stories about bouncing back.
They’re about growth in the middle of chaos and meeting the person you became when life changed the plan.

Something Shifted brings human back and helps you feel a little less lonely along the way.

Award-winning episodes that create genuine connection and remind you: you are not alone.

In this episode, Josh talks honestly about delayed grief, the way children absorb loss without the language to process it, and how the stories we tell - through music, through art, through conversation - can become the very thing that saves us.

He also reflects on identity: growing up the happy one, finding his voice as a storyteller, and learning to answer the three questions his drama lecturer once posed: who am I, why am I here, and is that okay?

From 14% to Full Breath: Remembering Tanya Bothma's Double Lung Transplant Journey

What does it feel like to breathe freely for the first time at 40 years old?

Tanya Bothma has struggled with every breath since birth. After a meconium aspiration as a newborn and repeated severe viral infections during childhood, she was diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, a progressive narrowing of the airways that no medication could reverse.

By 2017, Tanya's lung capacity had fallen to just 14%, less than one litre of air. That year, she became the first patient to receive a bilateral double lung transplant in a state hospital on the African continent. After the operation, her capacity reached 85%. For the first time, she could shout from the sidelines at her daughter's sports matches, support her husband, and live life without counting every breath.

Then, in December 2023, six years after her transplant, Tanya was diagnosed with chronic rejection.

In this episode, Tanya shares what it was like growing up with a severe chronic lung condition, the impossible decision to go ahead with a groundbreaking operation carrying a 50/50 survival rate, the grief of losing her brother in the same year as her transplant, and the joy of watching her daughter grow up on lungs she never thought she'd have.

She also speaks with extraordinary openness about organ donation; what it means to receive a stranger's gift, what it meant to watch her own brother's tissue help 26 people, and why she believes more people need to understand what organ donation really involves.

This episode was originally recorded in 2024 while Tanya was on the waiting list for her second double lung transplant. In December 2025, Tanya received that transplant.
Sadly, Tanya passed away shortly after. Her story lives on as a testament to courage, love, and the life-changing power of organ donation.

In this episode of Something Shifted, True Crime South Africa host Nicole Engelbrecht reflects on how childhood trauma shaped both her identity and her work, telling some of the country’s darkest stories.

Nicole Engelbrecht grew up in a world where some stories were never meant to leave the house. Violence, addiction, and instability lived quietly behind closed doors, and like many children raised in chaotic environments, she learned early how to survive by staying small, solving problems, and never becoming another burden.

Years later, Nicole would build a career telling some of South Africa’s darkest stories. Listeners often ask how she can immerse herself in crime and tragedy every day and still sleep at night.
For most of her life, Nicole believed the answer was simple: resilience.

But the truth was more complicated.

Nicole traces the hidden survival strategy that shaped her identity. From midnight moves and silent family secrets to raising a child while still in high school and forging her own path at seventeen, she learned to keep moving forward.

Then, decades later, a small moment - a passing explanation on a psychology podcast - sparked a powerful lifequake. Suddenly, the resilience she had worn as a badge of honour looked very different.

What followed was the slow, brave work of unpacking the boxes she had built to survive: understanding trauma, rewriting old narratives, and discovering that healing does not mean erasing the past; it means integrating it.

Nicole’s story is about more than survival.
It is about the stories we tell ourselves, and how sometimes those are the hardest stories to share with others.

Conn Bertish, a high-performing creative director, faced a rare brain cancer diagnosis at 36. Emergency surgery revealed a medulloblastoma, usually only found in children under five. In a matter of hours, Conn’s life fractured, forcing him to confront who he was; and who he would become.

In this episode of Something Shifted, Sean Loots explores how lifequakes - those seismic shifts that upend everything we know - can fracture identity and force us to rewrite the stories we tell ourselves.

Conn’s story begins with subtle slurred speech and six-second headaches that escalated into emergency brain surgery and a rare brain cancer diagnosis.

For him, this was the ultimate identity interruption. A before-and-after moment that challenged everything he believed about resilience, purpose, and survival.

Through courage, self-reflection, and the hidden strategies that make some people harder to kill, physically, mentally, and emotionally, Conn rebuilt his life.
This episode dives into the science of resilience, identity after trauma, and the powerful internal narratives we create to navigate life’s most intense disruptions.

Listeners will discover:
- How a lifequake can fracture identity and change the stories we tell ourselves
- The hidden survival strategies that allow people to endure extreme trauma
- Lessons on resilience, purpose, and transformation after life-changing events

Conn’s journey is more than survival; it’s a testament to the human capacity to integrate life’s upheavals into a stronger, more purposeful self.
<itunes:summary>Conn Bertish, a high-performing creative director, faced a rare brain cancer diagnosis at 36.

Healing is like peeling an onion. The final episode of this season is a story about love, although it's not a traditional love story. It's about love addiction, the fear of not being loved and the kind of love that can keep you alive.
It's about a mother's love, facing your greatest fear and learning to love yourself through it all.

Sara-Jayne shares her complex family background, the trauma of being abandoned and adopted at 7 weeks, and her struggles with addiction alongside her partner's relapse.
Through it all Sara-Jayne Makwala-King emphasizes that the opposite of addiction is not soberity, but rather connection.
'You feel as if it must be personal, and it isn't. If somebody's not ready to get well from addiction, there's nothing you can do. I am powerless over another person in their addiction.'

In this episode, we explore how Lesego’s life changed when he developed Bell’s Palsy, and what it took for him to reframe identity, hope, and resilience

If you've been listening to something shifted for a while, you've probably wondered about your own life quake. For Lesego, there are two distinct moments when the ground beneath his feet gave way. When he was fifteen, his dad passed away. And again, when he was 32, he thought he was having a stroke.

Eventually, it was confirmed that Lesego Majatladi had Bell's Palsy.
Bells Palsy is a strange condition which doctors can only diagnose once every other possibility has been ruled out.
An unexplained paralysis of facial muscles often associated with the latent effects of stress, Bell’s palsy begins suddenly and can get progressively worse.

In Lesego’s case, contracting Bell’s palsy was an acknowledgement that the life he had wasn’t what he wanted for himself, and things needed to change.

QUOTES:
'I stopped interacting with the world more than anything because it became an irritation. You walk into a room and people literally gasp, and then you must explain what's going on.'
'Experiencing Bell's palsy at 32 was terrifying, but it forced me to reevaluate my life and priorities.'
'The gift of Bell's palsy is an appreciation of mortality. You suddenly realize that life is not guaranteed, and if you want to do things, you better do them.'
<itunes:summary>In this episode, we explore how Lesego’s life changed when he developed Bell’s Palsy, and what it took for him to reframe identity, hope, and resilience

Tanya has struggled to breathe since the day she was born.

From viral infections to lung disease, Tanya was diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans. The narrowing of Tanya's airways could not be reversed by medication. Considering the diagnosis and years of health challenges, she got on with living her life.

By 2017, Tanya had just 14% lung capacity, and became the first patient to receive a bi-lateral lung transplant in a state hospital in Africa.
For the first time in her life, Tanya’s lung capacity reached 80% and she lived her life with renewed appreciation.

Everything changed six years after the operation when Tanya Bothma was diagnosed with chronic rejection.

Tanya's story helps us understand the life-changing impact of organ transplants and the emotional toll of waiting for another.
This episode emphasizes hope, community support, and the strength that emerges from life's adversities.

QUOTES:
'I knew that I had to fight for my family, and I needed to fight for my little girl, and I needed to fight for my hubby. And lastly, I really needed to fight for my parents. That was my only alternative, that was my only option, that's all I could do.'
'I cannot thank my organ donor enough because this woman has allowed me to watch my daughter grow up and be with my family every day.'
'I always say my organ donor is my hero, but at the same time, the medical team is also my hero and the Lord above is my hero.'

Do you think your co-workers have high or low emotional intelligence? What can we learn about EQ from someone that grew up in a communal home?
Theran Knighton-Fitt grew up in a home filled with love, support and more people than the average preschool class.
If, like me, you have aches and pains that come and go, you may have tried a few different methods of alleviating your ailments.

I’ve tried physiotherapy, chiropractors, body stress release, TRE and even Rolfing.

Rolfing is when a practitioner massages the muscles and fascia not only where you're feeling pain, but all over your body with the goal of fixing your body's posture so that it corrects any lingering imbalances that are causing the pain.

Sometimes we can identify the reason for the pain we are feeling. I walk into a countertop and bruise my hip or I lift a weight from a position of instability and I pull muscle of pinch a nerve.

But what if the origin of the pain you feel in your body isn’t as obvious to identify. This is where I started to explore the world of somatic therapy.

Somatics is described as "any practice that uses the mind-body connection to help you survey your internal self and listen to signals your body sends about areas of pain, discomfort, or imbalance".

These practices - and there are many of them - allow you to access more information about the ways your body might hold on to your experiences.

My guest on this episode is Shaun Brooking.

Shaun earned an Honours degree in Human Performance in 2007, after completing his degree in Sports and Exercise Science. at Stellenbosch University.

Since then, Shaun has added depth to his academic knowledge through personal experience and further education, developing himself into a somatic coach and educator. Listen to Something Shifted: The Soundtrack on Spotify

"Give yourself permission to do things that bring you joy." Ronen Aires

If you’re anything like me - and I think you are - you may have healthy debates with friends about how the schooling system has developed our way of thinking.
Programed us to believe that a holiday is when you slow down.
Groomed us even, into believing that we don’t deserve a physical or mental break unless our calendar is clear, our email inbox is empty and our to-do list is all wrapped up.

These debates often arrive at the conclusion that while elements of this may be true, ultimately we have less and less capacity.

In this episode, I speak with Ronen Aires about the importance of taking control of one's busy schedule and finding ways to add capacity to our lives.

We delve into a concept Ronen calls "The Chooseday Experiment," and he shares his personal journey of dedicating Tuesdays to doing things that bring him joy, fulfillment, and creative inspiration. By intentionally creating space for activities that resonate with his passions and well-being, Ronen has found a way to avoid burnout and recharge his creative energy.

Key Takeaways and Insights:

The Chooseday Experiment: Dedicate a day or specific time each week to engage in activities that bring joy, fulfillment, and creativity.
Prioritize Self-Care: Create boundaries and make space for activities that recharge your energy and well-being.
Microdose December: Regularly replenish your creative energy to avoid burnout and maintain productivity.
Shift from Urgent to Important: Reevaluate priorities and focus on what truly serves your highest interests.
Embrace Agency: Take control of your schedule and find your own pace to experience flow and inspiration.

More about my guest:
Youth marketing expert, dynamic public speaker and thought-provoking author – Ronen Aires has always been fascinated with the human condition. He’s trained globally with the best teachers in the art and science of human performance. In this role, he has helped many leaders around the world find their A-Game. He strongly advocates for the importance of living a full and holistic lifestyle, encouraging others to accelerate their potential by embracing ancient wisdom and science backed tools.

As the renowned co-founder and CEO of Student Village, South Africa’s most prominent student marketing specialists, Ronen has dedicated much of his career to supporting youth and guiding them to greatness. Whether its speaking on podcasts and being featured in the media, or mentoring, writing articles and a book, Ronen utilizes all available platforms to highlight the genius of today’s young adults.

Ronen is a husband, father, advocate, entrepreneur, facilitator, coach and investor among other things. His preferred title?

In this episode, Sean speaks with Terence Mentor, who shares his personal journey and experiences with ADHD. Terence opens up about the challenges he faced before understanding his condition and how speaking openly about it has helped him feel less alone. They discuss the internal chaos and struggles of living with ADHD, as well as the moments of hyper-focus and clarity that bring excitement and fulfillment. Terence also shares his process of getting diagnosed and the relief that came with understanding his brain works differently.

Terence speaks about:

Living, working and parenting with ADHD,
The process of getting a diagnosis,
Reducing the feeling of operating from a deficit,
And how the world is not designed for people who are neurodivergent.

The international symbol for Mental Health Awareness is a green ribbon. Reason being that green signifies new life, new growth, and new beginnings, so I thought I would drop an "Easter Egg" in this episode. A green heart.

Some Assembly Required is about matters of the heart and the head, and this episode is extra special for me. One, because Danny Painter has agreed to share openly about her journey to therapy and I think her story may just help break some stigmas.

And two because I get to express my gratitude to Danny for helping me get out of my own way. If it weren’t for that chance conversion at an event in 2022, this podcast might not exist.

Danny has been through many colourful, life altering experiences. In this episode Danny shares

her deepest fears,
her experiences as a children's television presenter,
growing up in culturally diverse family, (Jewish + Zulu)
and how she considered ending her own life.
Early in our marriage we spoke about having more than one child. And from time to time we revisit that conversation - each time with a refreshed perspective.
I've never asked Ruenda what it is like being a mom or if she has always wanted to mother a child. So that is what I did in this episode.

Long time listeners of this podcast know that our daughter has a complicated medical history. Expect raw responses to questions like "How do you prefer to tell strangers about Zoe?" and "How has your concept of motherhood changed?"
We also unpack;

a word to describe each year with Zoe,
the aspect of being a mom Rue would like more of,
and her thoughts on how can we best support moms everywhere.

How to use visualization and build capacity with Jonno Proudfoot

Jonno Proudfoot openly shares his difficult childhood, marked by his parents' divorce and a lack of support.

He coped by turning to alcohol and drugs, starting at a very young age, but eventually found his drive to succeed through the need to feel significant.

As the co-author of the book Real Meal Revolution, Jonno experienced both incredible success and a downward spiral. Through it all, he learned that failure is just another word for learning, and that resilience is the key to bouncing back from difficulties.

Sleep better tonight and the downside of alarms with Dr. Els van der Helm

Did you know there is a waste management system for your brain? Essentially it is responsible for carrying fresh fluids into and waste fluids out of your brain. This happens mostly during sleep. So, what then if you don't get enough sleep?
While I do not have the answer to that question, I can tell you how I feel when I don't get good quality sleep. And I'm sure your story would be similar. Groggy. Lethargic. Foggy. Irritable. You know the drill.

I have lucked out on my fair share of sleep in my lifetime. I've also had my sleep cycles interrupted far too many times. Having a young child with epilepsy means I never really switch off, simply because a seizure can happen without warning.

I’ve slept in hospital passages, on the floor in hospital rooms, and prior to Zoe being born, I even slept in back up studios between radio shows. This sleep I speak of was never restorative. And I know now how much of an impact this added to my burnout.

Dr. Els van der Helm is a sleep neuroscientist and joins me on this episode from her home office in Switzerland. Arianna Huffington’s Thrive Global named Dr. van der Helm one of the top 5 sleep experts in the world. Els, she said I can call her by her first name, is very much focused on helping us improve our day to day performance by improving the sleep of business leaders and their teams.

Because keeping it together is so much harder than we ever thought it would be, I really hope this episode of Some Assembly Required gives you insight into how your brain works when you're not thinking about it.

Something Shifted is a South African podcast about identity after interruption, those unpredictable lifequakes that divide our lives into before and after.

Before the diagnosis.
Before the loss.
Before the moment everything changed.

Hosted by award-winning broadcaster Sean Loots, Something Shifted explores identity, resilience, reinvention, and personal growth in the aftermath of disruption. Because we all face moments that fracture who we thought we were.

On this podcast, we lean in when things are complicated.
Through honest, documentary-style conversations, some of South Africa’s most interesting and courageous voices share how experiences that felt devastating - divorce, burnout, grief, career collapse, parenting challenges, health crises - became catalysts for growth and unexpected empowerment.

This is not a quick-fix self-help show.
It’s a podcast about transformation.
About rebuilding identity.
About finding possibility in the middle of chaos.

If you’re navigating change, searching for meaning after loss, or standing at the edge of a second act, you’ll feel at home here.

Because Something Shifted believes in the power of great stories, and in the power of possibility.

I think you're going to like it here.
