Jude sits down with Vickus Horne of Cherry Vynil to explore his passion for 4 Degrees Brewery and the “Bands in the Brewery” series. The next live session, happening on 27 March 2026, will showcase acclaimed South African singer-songwriter Noa Milan..

Bands in the Brewery is a monthly live music series hosted at 4 Degrees Brewery & Taphouse, launched in 2026 to showcase rotating local talent in a relaxed, vibey setting. The event blends live bands, craft beer, and food like pizzas, creating a social, community-driven atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating. Guests can enjoy fresh brews from Hopman Brewery and Sweet River Brewery. Tickets are priced at R80 online and R150 at the door, often including a complimentary half-pint on arrival. Located in Salt River’s trendy industrial hub, the microbrewery and taproom is known for live events, tastings, and laid-back hangout spaces, making it a popular, affordable night out that supports Cape Town’s local music scene.

Cherry Vynil, a Cape Town–based indie rock band formed in 2008, is known for their upbeat, feel-good blend of indie, folk, and alternative rock. Fronted by Vickus Horne, they debuted at the V&A Waterfront and built a reputation performing at local venues and festivals. Their 2015 album Busking Cape Town reflects their street performer roots. Sharing stages with Freshlyground and Prime Circle, they’ve released uplifting singles like “Simunye – We Are One” and “Lights.” Renowned for energetic, community-focused performances, Cherry Vynil continues to grow as a proudly South African band promoting connection, positivity, and authentic storytelling. 4 Degrees Brewery Quicket Link · 4 Degrees Brewery Instagram · 4 Degrees Brewery Facebook

Tony Westby-Nunn

The Unicorn chats with Tony Westby-Nunn, author of Rhodes Cottage Museum, on the Drive Zone.

Rhodes Cottage Museum – The Story of the Cottage Where Cecil John Rhodes Spent His Last Days, written by former curator Tony Westby-Nunn, is a detailed and richly illustrated guide to the historic Muizenberg site. The book offers a comprehensive record of the museum as it existed around 2005, documenting its displays, furniture, and artefacts to preserve the collection for posterity.

Structured as a room-by-room exploration, the publication provides historical context for each exhibit while situating the cottage within the broader narrative of Cecil John Rhodes’s final days. Importantly, it does not shy away from the more controversial aspects of Rhodes’s life, offering readers a nuanced and informed perspective rather than a purely celebratory account.

<itunes:summary>The Unicorn chats with Tony Westby-Nunn, author of Rhodes Cottage Museum, on the Drive Zone.

Westby-Nunn, a researcher with in-depth knowledge of the site, draws on his experience as curator to compile an authoritative reference that serves both historians and visitors. Appendices expand on Rhodes’s life and legacy, adding further depth to the main text.

Launched to enhance public understanding of the cottage and its significance, the book remains available for purchase and has been listed at outlets such as Obz Books at approximately R320.</itunes:summary>

Recently, ANJO connected with Tracy Scott from Brackenfell, whose journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) deeply reflects the organisation’s values.

"The Unicorn" chats to Gabriel Fisher from Shadetree Foundation about their mentorship program at Crossfit Masi.

Gabe met Brian and Kristin in 2021 after dropping into a CrossFit gym in Fishers, Indiana while visiting family. Like many CrossFitters, he and Brian stayed in touch online. In early 2023, Brian and Kristin organized a gear drive at their gym, collecting two suitcases of equipment for L-327 Fitness. Soon after, Gabe invited them to Cape Town to meet the athletes, join outreach efforts, spend time with his family, and explore the Western Cape. The call to help was undeniable.

Since 2021, Gabe had been running L-327 Fitness from a nearby CrossFit box, coaching mornings in exchange for access to train local teens. When the gym relocated 25 minutes away in 2023, athletes could no longer walk to training. Gabe began coordinating daily transport, reducing training time and increasing strain on his family. Brian and Kristin saw both the challenges and the program’s potential. As the couples talked, prayed, and dreamed, the idea of creating something new took shape.

Inspired by Lindsey’s family motto—serving “those in the shade of our tree”—they envisioned a place rooted in faith, fitness, and community. From this came CrossFit Masiphumelele and the Shade Tree Foundation, expanding the work begun through L-327 Fitness: empowering at-risk youth with spiritual growth, physical training, life skills, and the hope to choose a better path. Crossfit Masi Website · Crossfit Masi Facebook Page

Cupcakes of HOPE (NPC 2012/103028/08, PBO930053726) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising funds and awareness for children with cancer through the simple joy of baking cupcakes. Our flagship event, South Africa’s National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer, takes place every September during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Entirely community-driven, it unites volunteers, bakers, and supporters across the country to make a meaningful difference. Alongside fundraising, we share vital information by distributing leaflets on the Early Warning Signs of childhood cancer, helping families recognise symptoms sooner and access medical care when it matters most. Cupcakes Of Hope Website · Longbeach Mall Website · Longbeach Mall Facebook Page · Longbeach Mall Instagram

The Unicorn" chats to Musa and Junior from Fish Hoek Football Club U15 Development Team about their upcoming tour to Jhb in October and their Back-a-Buddy Campaign to raise funds.

Fish Hoek AFC, founded in 1930, is nearing its 100-year milestone as a cornerstone of the Southern Peninsula community. A registered non-profit (NPO 229-496), the Club is volunteer-run and dedicated to developing local youth through football, emphasizing teamwork, discipline, family, and community values. Over the years, they’ve produced players who’ve competed professionally, earned international scholarships, and represented South Africa. That legacy continues as their U15 Development Team – together for more than three years – heads to Johannesburg from 28 September to 4 October 2025 to compete in the prestigious Gauteng Development League, hosted by Randburg AFC.
Performed by Sean Higgs | Directed by Gideon de Wet
Beggared in SA is a gripping one-man play that follows a privileged white South African man who loses everything and is forced to live as a beggar in a black township. Blending sharp humour with raw emotion, the story confronts themes of privilege, prejudice, and survival. As he shares his journey, unexpected lessons and human connections emerge—offering a powerful reminder of empathy, resilience, and shared humanity. Beggered In SA Facebook Link

General Johan Booysen

The Unicorn sits down with General Johan Booysen on The Drive Zone to discuss his gripping book, Blood on Their Hands written by Jessica Pitchford.

When Johan Booysen hears that the new Provincial Police Chief takes backhanders from a Durban businessman, he decides to give her the benefit of the doubt. But the evidence becomes impossible to ignore and he soon gets dragged down the corridors of power and politics into a web of intrigue, deceit and betrayal that, at times, he has trouble making sense of. Only when he is arrested, handcuffed and tossed into a cell does Booysen realise just how ruthless those opposed to him are – an opposition he comes to call the ‘cabal’ – and whom he believes have more blood on their hands than the so-called Cato Manor Death Squad with which he is closely associated.

Blood on Their Hands traces Johan’s Booysen’s life and career - from patrolling the streets of Amanzimtoti in the 1970s to his rise in 2010 to major general and head of KZN's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation unit, the Hawks. But his tenure is short-lived. When Booysen decides to take on those so determined to be rid of him, each legal battle he wins is met by hostility and further efforts to shut him out of the criminal justice system. But capitulating is not in his DNA… Amazon Link to Blood On Their Hands - General Johan Booysen Reveals His Truth

"Once opened, never undone." Prepare for an electrifying spectacle where mythical gods, destiny, and forbidden desires collide. Pandora’s Box is a jaw-dropping fusion of gravity-defying acrobatics, hypnotic choreography, and immersive storytelling, bringing to life the legend of Pandora—crafted by the gods as a gift… or a curse.

With every step, she embodies Zeus’s power, Aphrodite’s passion, Athena’s wisdom, Dionysus’s ecstasy, Krytos’s mysteries, Apollo’s truth, Epimetheus’s hope, and Ares’s fire. As the stage transforms into a realm where gods play dangerous games, Pandora makes the fateful choice to open the box—unleashing a force beyond imagination.

Longbeach Mall Events and Initiatives

1. The Giving Tree Project (11 Nov – 15 Dec)
Join Longbeach Mall and The Rotary Club in spreading joy this festive season! Visit the grand Christmas Tree at the centre court, pick an angel tag, and grant a local child’s heartfelt gift wish. Wrap your gift, attach the angel tag, and place it in the donation boxes by the tree. Together, we can brighten young lives!

2. Wellness Day (Saturday, 16 Nov)
Discover your health status at Longbeach Mall’s first Wellness Day, hosted in partnership with the Fish Hoek Lions Club. Enjoy FREE SCREENINGS from 9 AM to 1 PM at the centre court, including:

Diabetes Tests (Lions Club)
Hearing Screenings (Hearing Aid Labs)
Breast Exams (CANSA, in a private area)
PSA Blood Testing & Blood Grouping (Western Cape Blood Service).
Take advantage of this opportunity to connect with local health professionals.

3. Kids’ Crafts at the Mall (Tues 17 & Wed 18 Dec)
Let your little ones embrace the festive spirit with fun-filled craft sessions led by local children’s illustrator Nicola Smith. Kids can decorate gingerbread house ornaments and Christmas angels at the centre court on:
Tuesday, 17 Dec
Wednesday, 18 Dec

Each day includes three 45-minute sessions (limited to 10 kids per session). Arrive early to secure a spot!

4. Back to School Drive (6 – 31 Jan)
As the new school year begins, Longbeach Mall and a local NGO are teaming up to support community children. Drop off school supplies—A4 books, stationery, school shoes, clothing, or sports gear—at our donation drive in the centre court. Contributions can be new or gently used. Our partner NGO will also offer a book-wrapping station in exchange for donations. Join us in making a difference for local schools! Longbeach Mall Website · Longbeach Mall Facebook Page · Longbeach Mall Instagram

Join us in making a difference for local schools!</itunes:summary>
