Tribute, remembrance, lineage — these are not only international conversations. Here at home, musicians are also returning to the work of South African elders whose compositions continue to shape the sound of the present.

The collective known as Kwanti Leeh! brings together Ayanda Sikade, Sisonke Xonti, Andile Yenana and Herbie Tsoaeli. Their guiding idea is simple but profound: to honour what Herbie Tsoaeli calls “Majors Up There” — the departed elders — and “Majors Down Here”, the living architects of South African jazz. Their performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Franschhoek revisits the music of composers like Winston Mankunku Ngozi, Johnny Dyani, Abdullah Ibrahim, Tete Mbambisa and Zim Ngqawana.

A likeness. A trace. A suggestion of something once known — or perhaps something still becoming. With Asher, return is never simple. It is layered, political, spiritual and sonic. From the disciplined corridors of the Eastman School to the restless laboratories of 1960s New York; from orchestral halls to intimate clubs; from the seismic mid-’60s recordings with Miles Davis alongside Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams to leading his own ensembles with structural daring and invention, he has walked behind legends and has stood beside innovators. And in doing so, he has never once surrendered the clarity of his own voice.
This isiXhosa edition - translated by the late Professor Peter Tshobisa Mtuze, with editorial stewardship from Professor Simphiwe Sesanti and Dr Athambile Masola - and carrying a new foreword by Nkosinathi Biko - reopens a text that never closed. It asks us: what does Black Consciousness sound like in the mother tongue? What does liberation mean when it is spoken in the rhythm of home?

A Jazz Standard Tribute To Feya Faku

Faku was born in Port Elizabeth's New Brighton. Faku was mentored by South African jazz musicians Patrick Pasha, Dudley Tito, and Whitey Kulumani, who supported his early musical ability. After that, he enrolled at the University of Natal in Durban, where, in the early 1980s, Darius Brubeck founded the nation's first jazz and popular music school. Despite the restrictions of apartheid, Brubeck and his wife Catherine permitted Faku and the other three new students to remain in their home because they recognised their emerging talent and their unofficial student status. Joining several local jazz groups in the 1990s, he soon gained recognition for his extraordinary talent, which led to partnerships with South African jazz greats like Zim Ngqawana, Bheki Mseleku, and Abdullah Ibrahim.
Faku passed away on June 23, 2025, in Basel, Switzerland, at the age of 63. There, at the Bird's Eye Club, he was scheduled to perform. kaya 959
