Farmersweekly.co.za reports that South African farmers remain trapped in an electricity crisis, even though load-shedding may have ended more than two years ago. With soaring tariffs, deteriorating distribution infrastructure, and policies that discourage independent power generation, the cost and reliability of electricity have emerged as growing threats to agricultural profitability, food security, and export competitiveness. According to Chris Yelland, an energy analyst at EE Business Intelligence, the problem is no longer electricity generation. Instead, the crisis has shifted to the affordability of electricity.

The South African agricultural sector is currently navigating a mix of industry anticipation and urgent crisis management. As the continent prepares for the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural show, Nampo Harvest Day, which kicks off on May 12th in Bothaville to showcase the future of farming technology, the government is simultaneously overhauling its disease response strategies. Minister John Steenhuisen recently gazetted a new national vaccination framework for foot-and-mouth disease, moving toward a science-based, proactive approach to restore the country's FMD-free status. However, these advancements are being countered by a burgeoning infrastructure crisis in the Northern Cape, where record-breaking rainfall has devastated an already neglected road network, leading Agri Northern Cape to demand a provincial state of disaster as farmers struggle to maintain basic operations.

While industry leaders at an IFAJ webinar noted that COP30 elevated agriculture's profile without securing formal negotiation breakthroughs, domestic attention in South Africa has shifted to a legal standoff as groups like Sakeliga and Saai challenge the Department of Agriculture for missing a court-ordered deadline regarding foot-and-mouth disease frameworks.
Stay informed on the latest developments shaping the South African agricultural landscape:

Policy Risks: @Agbiz warns that SANRAL’s draft policy on Rest and Service Facilities could increase transport costs and overregulate land use, potentially eroding rural competitiveness.

South Africa’s agricultural sector continues to prove its resilience, emerging as a primary engine for national economic growth. This episode dives into the latest Statistics South Africa data, showing how a 0.4% boost in GDP was fueled by strong performance in field crops and horticulture.

However, growth comes with its own set of challenges. We take a deep dive into the 2026 Avocado Season, where production is expected to soar to 22 million cartons. While the "on-year" yield is a win for farmers, we discuss the looming "perfect storm" of increased competition from Peru and the ongoing logistical bottlenecks at the Port of Cape Town.

Finally, we look at the skies. With the 2025/26 La Niña phase expected to exit by April, we explore what the shift to neutral atmospheric conditions means for rainfall stability and long-term crop planning.
