We’ve looked at priority giving, percentage giving, and progressive giving. Now let’s look at prompted giving. From time to time, God will prompt you to make a special gift. God uses promptings to communicate that you are in a unique position to meet the needs of His kingdom. As you walk through life, God constantly introduces you to people with needs. Sometimes it’s a spiritual need; other times it’s a physical need. Sometimes you are the one in need, and other times you provide what’s needed. This is how the church works. As stewards, we have the privilege of interacting with our heavenly Father and ministering to the needs of His children in the world. Without the element of prompting, your giving could become very cold and calculated. Promptings are the pulse in the church body. In 1 John 3:17, we read, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” (NIV). God uses the needs of others as opportunities to exhibit His love alive in us. And often those opportunities are revealed through special promptings that are above and beyond our regular giving. Perhaps you’re thinking, “I can’t afford to do that.” Factor God into the equation! Not only can He use you to meet the needs of others, but He can also multiply the seed of generosity you sowed into the harvest you need. Kom ons kyk na aangespoorde gee. Van tyd tot tyd sal God jou aanspoor om ‘n spesiale gawe te maak. God gebruik aansporings om te kommunikeer dat jy in ‘n unieke posisie is om in die behoeftes van sy koninkryk te voorsien. Soos jy deur die lewe gaan, stel God jou voortdurend aan mense met behoeftes voor. Soms is dit ‘n geestelike behoefte; ander kere is dit ‘n fisiese behoefte. Soms is jy die een in nood; ander kere voorsien jy wat nodig is. Dit is hoe die kerk werk. As rentmeesters het ons die voorreg om met ons hemelse Vader te kommunikeer en in die behoeftes van sy kinders in die wêreld te voorsien. Sonder die element van aansporing kan jou manier van gee baie koud en berekend word. Aansporings is die kerkliggaam se hartklop. In 1 Johannes 3:17 (NLV) lees ons: ‘Iemand wat ryk is aan aardse lewensmiddele en sy broers en susters sien gebrek ly, maar weier om ‘n helpende hand uit te steek – hoe is dit moontlik dat die liefde van God in daardie persoon woon?’ God gebruik die behoeftes van ander as geleenthede om sy liefde wat lewend in ons is, ten toon te stel. Dikwels word hierdie geleenthede deur spesiale aansporings wat bo en behalwe ons gereelde manier van gee is, geopenbaar. Miskien dink jy: ‘Ek kan dit nie bekostig nie.’ Betrek God egter hierby! Hy kan jou nie net gebruik om in die behoeftes van ander te voorsien nie, maar Hy kan ook die saad van vrygewigheid wat jy gesaai het vermeerder om die oes wat jy nodig het, te vorm. You should deal with temptation in the same way you would deal with weeds in a garden. You can’t just cut off the tops of the weeds, because in a few days, they’ll be back. Similarly, saying, “I’ll just stop sinning” addresses only the externals. Another option is mowing the weeds all the way down to the ground, cutting off the shoots. Now the garden looks good and weed-free for a while, but it doesn’t stay weed-free. The only effective way to deal with temptation is at its root. The Bible says: “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make a way of escape.” What is God’s “way of escape” for you? Living in His Word and allowing His Word to live in you. Satan tempted Jesus three different times in the wilderness, but Jesus overcame him. How? Three times He answered, “It is written.” You need to know and use the Word of God in your encounters with temptation. The battlefield is in your mind. This is why Paul said, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2 NKJV). Jy moet versoekings op dieselfde manier as wat jy onkruid in ‘n tuin sou uitwis, hanteer. Jy kan nie net die bopunte van die onkruid afsny nie, want oor ‘n paar dae sal dit terug wees. Dis soos om te sê: ‘Ek sal eenvoudig ophou sondig.’ Dit spreek net die uiterlike aan. Nog ‘n opsie is om die onkruid en die lote tot op die grond af te sny. Die tuin lyk vir ‘n rukkie goed en onkruidvry, maar dit bly nie onkruidvry nie. Die enigste effektiewe manier om versoeking te hanteer, is om by die wortel daarvan uit te kom. Die Bybel sê: ‘Onthou, die versoekings wat oor julle pad kom, is nie uniek nie; ander ondervind dit ook. God is getrou. Hy sal keer dat die versoeking te sterk vir julle word. Paul told Timothy, “Pay close attention to yourself.” Preachers often preach to others the very things they themselves need most! If you want to know which battle they’re fighting, just listen to what they’re preaching. When God talks to them, they give it “an introduction, three points and a conclusion,” then pass it on to others. Sometimes they’re the first folks to resist a new move of God because of their position or concern for their financial security. When God begins to rock the boat, it brings both joy and conflict. It wasn’t easy for Moses to leave the comfort of a palace and spend forty years in the wilderness being trained. Imagine trying to explain that to your family and friends. Abraham left everything to follow God and become the father of a nation. It makes exciting reading, but would you like to have made the trip with him? It has been said that some people make things happen, other people watch things happen, and other people don’t know what’s happening. If you’re tired of getting nowhere with God and you’d like to break out, then get into His presence today and stay there until you’ve heard from Him. He may tell you to stay where you are, and if He does, you’ll have complete peace (See Colossians 3:15). He may tell you to get ready for something new, and if He does, He will equip you to handle it. Wanneer God die boot begin skommel, bring dit beide vreugde en konflik mee. Dit was nie maklik vir Moses om die gemak van ‘n paleis prys te gee en veertig jaar in die woestyn deur te bring nie. Abraham het alles verlaat om God te volg en die vader van ‘n nasie te word. Dit is opwindende leesstof, maar sou jy graag so ‘n moeilike reis saam met Hom wou deurmaak? Daar word gesê dat sommige mense dinge laat gebeur, ander mense kyk hoe dinge gebeur, en ander mense weet nie wat gebeur nie. As jy moeg is om te voel of jy nêrens met God kom nie en jy wil wegbreek, moet jy vandag in sy teenwoordigheid kom en daar bly totdat jy van Hom gehoor het. Our destiny has far less to do with what we do than it does with who we become. “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29 NIV). And it takes many different experiences to bring that to pass. Hence Paul writes: “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine…like stars in the sky” (Philippians 2:14-15 NIV). Paul likens us to shining stars, and the word shine means to reflect. The scientific term is albedo. It’s a measurement of how much sunlight a celestial body reflects. The planet Venus, for example, has the highest albedo at close to 0.7. In other words, nearly seventy percent of the light that hits Venus is reflected. On the other hand, the moon has an albedo point of only 0.07. Only seven percent of sunlight is reflected, yet it lights our way on cloudless nights. In a similar sense, each of us has a spiritual albedo. The goal? One hundred percent reflectivity. “We…who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” You cannot produce light; you can only reflect it. To be “conformed to his image” means we think like, talk like, feel like, and act like Him. During a prayer meeting one night, an elderly woman pleaded with God, “It really doesn’t matter what You do with us, Lord; just have Your way in our lives.” Adelaide Pollard, a well-known itinerant Bible teacher, overheard her prayer. At the time, she was deeply discouraged because she had been unable to raise the support she needed to go to Africa for missionary service. She was moved by this woman’s sincere request of God, and when she went home that evening, she meditated on these words from Scripture: “Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying…‘As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand’” (Jeremiah 18:3-6 NKJV). Before retiring that night, Adelaide took pen in hand and wrote a prayer that has become a well-known hymn: “Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Thou art the potter, I am the clay. The ability to recall the past is one of the most powerful functions of your brain. And when you recall past victories, you rekindle the courage, joy, and sense of accomplishment associated with the victory. You can never underestimate the power of an experience to re-inspire faith. From the parting of the Red Sea to the fall of Jericho, the Israelites had numerous miracles God had performed on their behalf. And He had cautioned them about forgetting His mighty acts: “Remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear” (Deuteronomy 7:18-19 NIV). If you’ve allowed Satan to give you “experience amnesia” and have forgotten those times of divine intervention in your life, why not recall someone else’s testimony? Faith can come from more than one direction. Recall the good things God has done for your friends, acquaintances, and coworkers. Miracles are exciting, no matter who the recipient is. And if God did it before, He can certainly do it again. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 NIV). When something in your future feels threatening, stop and remember God’s goodness to you in the past. Recall a time or incident in which He brought you out of a difficult situation that you thought you’d never get through. Tydens ‘n gebedsbyeenkoms een aand het ‘n bejaarde vrou God gesmeek: ‘Dit maak regtig nie saak wat U met ons doen nie, Here; doen net asseblief u wil in ons lewens.’ Adelaide Pollard, ‘n bekende rondreisende Bybelonderwyseres, het haar gebed gehoor. Op daardie tydstip was sy diep mismoedig, omdat sy nie genoeg fondse kon insamel om ‘n sendingreis na Afrika te onderneem nie. Sy is deur hierdie vrou se opregte versoek aan God ontroer en toe sy daardie aand huis toe gaan, het sy oor hierdie woorde uit die Skrif gemediteer: ‘Ek het toe na die werkplek van die pottebakker gegaan en hom gekry waar hy besig was om op die pottebakkerswiel te werk. Maar die pot waarmee hy besig was, was nie ‘n sukses nie. Hy het toe die klei inmekaargedruk en weer begin om ‘n nuwe pot te vorm soos hy dit wou hê. Die Here het toe weer vir my ‘n boodskap gegee. Hy het gevra: ‘O Israel, kan Ek nie met julle net so maak soos die pottebakker met die klei maak nie? Hy het hulle gewaarsku om nie sy magtige dade te vergeet nie: ‘Moenie vir hulle bang wees nie. Onthou net wat die Here jou God aan Farao en aan die hele Egipte gedoen het. Met julle eie oë het julle die verskriklike dinge gesien wat die Here jou God na hulle gestuur het. Onthou die tekens en wonderdade en die geweldige krag wat die Here gebruik het om julle uit Egipte te lei. Hierdie selfde krag sal die Here jou God gebruik teen die volke waarvoor jy bang is’ (Deuteronomium 7:18-19 NLV). As jy toegelaat het dat Satan jou die tye van goddelike ingryping in jou lewe laat vergeet, moet jy iemand anders se getuienis herroep. Geloof kan uit meer as een rigting kom. Shame and condemnation are two weapons Satan will use to torment you. They will steal your rest and sap the joy out of your life. What’s the answer? Begin to see yourself as God sees you. “God made him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” When we are aware of our shortcomings, how is it possible to believe that God sees us as “righteous” and wants us to see ourselves that way too? Because when you became a Christian, God placed you “in Christ”; therefore, you are always accepted by Him. “Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1 NIV). The word justified means: “just-as-if-I’d never sinned.” And that’s how God sees you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year, all the way from the new birth to the New Jerusalem. Plus, Jesus understands your struggles since He dealt with them Himself. He “understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. Skaamte en veroordeling is twee wapens wat Satan sal gebruik om jou te martel. Hulle sal jou rus steel en die vreugde uit jou lewe tap. Wat is dan die antwoord? Begin jouself sien soos God jou sien. ‘God het Hom wat nie sonde geken het nie, sonde gemaak ter wille van ons sodat ons, op grond van ons eenheid met Christus, deur God vrygespreek kan word.’ Wanneer ons van ons tekortkominge bewus is, is dit moeilik om te glo dat ons deur God vrygespreek is en dat Hy wil hê dat ons onsself deur sy oë moet sien. Toe jy egter ‘n Christen geword het, het God jou ‘een’ met Christus gemaak, daarom aanvaar Hy jou altyd. ‘As mense wat deur God vrygespreek is omdat ons glo, is daar nou vrede tussen God en ons op grond van wat Jesus Christus ons Here gedoen het’ (Romeine 5:1 NLV). Wanneer jy vrygespreek is, is dit asof jy nog nooit sonde gedoen het nie. Dit is hoe God jou vier-en-twintig uur per dag, sewe dae per week, driehonderd-vyf-en-sestig dae per jaar, sien. James addressed “the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad,” those early Christians who had fled Jerusalem. The Greek word James used to describe this is “diaspora,” from which we get the word “dispersed.” The picture is of someone scattering seeds. After the martyrdom of Stephen in Acts chapter seven, the Christians in Jerusalem came under increasing persecution from the Roman Empire. They refused the Romans’ demand to confess “Caesar is Lord.” Instead, they insisted that there was only one Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, the Bible informs us, “They were all scattered…except the apostles” (Acts 8:1 NKJV). James wrote to believers who had to leave their homes, their jobs, their properties—everything. Talk about stress! Yet God permitted them to experience the scattering and the resulting stress for a purpose. Had these believers stayed in Jerusalem, chances are the gospel would not have spread so completely through the known world. Everywhere these early followers of Jesus were scattered, they shared the Good News of Christ’s redemptive work, and in just one generation, the gospel had spread throughout the Roman Empire. That’s why James wrote to the church that was “scattered abroad”: “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials” (James 1:2 NKJV). Their uprooting from Jerusalem resulted in the planting of the church throughout the known world. “Our God turned the curse into a blessing” (Nehemiah 13:2 NKJV). With God, short-term pain can lead to long-term gain. He uses setbacks we sometimes don’t understand to fulfill His purposes. Is that what’s happening in your life right now? Jakobus het vir die ‘die twaalf stamme wat oor die wêreld versprei is,’ daardie vroeë Christene wat uit Jerusalem gevlug het, geskryf. Hierdie vroeë volgelinge van Jesus wat so versprei is, het oral waar hulle gekom het die Goeie Nuus van Christus se verlossingswerk gedeel en in slegs een generasie het die evangelie deur die Romeinse Ryk versprei. Daarom het Jakobus aan die kerk ‘wat oor die wêreld versprei is,’ geskryf: ‘…wanneer julle in allerhande beproewings beland, moet julle eintlik baie bly wees’ (Jakobus 1:2 NLV). Hul ontworteling uit Jerusalem het tot die vestiging van die kerk regdeur die wêreld gelei. ‘…Maar ons God het die vloek in ‘n seën verander’ (Nehemia 13:2 NLV). North of Israel and teeming with aquatic life of many kinds, the Sea of Galilee is a beautiful blue. South of Israel is the Dead Sea, and it’s called “Dead” for a good reason: There’s no life in its stagnant water. What makes these two bodies of water so different? First, the Sea of Galilee has an inlet: the Jordan River flows into it. On its southern shore, the Sea of Galilee also has an outlet: water flows through the Great Rift Valley. Like the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea has an inlet: the Jordan flows into it. But the Dead Sea has no outlet; it takes in but does not give out. This is the theme of the book of James. Vibrant believers not only take in, but they also give out. They put the word they receive (input) into action (output): “If anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:23-25 NKJV). James warns us not to become so heavenly-minded that we are no earthly good; that it’s not enough to read the Scriptures, but we must also look for practical ways to put them into practice each day. Dit is die tema van die boek Jakobus. Lewendige gelowiges neem nie net in nie, maar hulle gee ook uit. Hulle sit die woord wat hulle ontvang (inset) in aksie (uitset) om: ‘…As jy altyd net die woord aanhoor en nooit doen wat dit sê nie, is dit so goed jy kyk na jou gesig in die spieël sonder om iets aan jou voorkoms te doen. The book of James has 108 verses, and it outlines how we can put our faith into action. It was written by Jesus’ half-brother, the natural-born son of Mary and Joseph. Apparently, James became a believer as a result of the resurrection. Paul said that after Jesus rose from the grave, “he appeared to James, then to all the apostles” (1 Corinthians 15:7 NIV). Somewhere, privately and personally, the risen Lord met with James, and His little brother’s life was never the same. After his encounter with his older brother, who was the victorious-over-death Godman, James grew in faith and became the undisputed leader of the Jerusalem church. The apostle Paul referred to him as a pillar of the church (see Galatians 2:9), and tradition tells us that James was so devoted to prayer that he was given the nickname “camel knees” because of the calluses resulting from the hours he spent on his knees. Today we are 2,000 years removed from James’ writing, yet his letter remains as relevant to us as the Internet’s morning news. The central message of his book is contained in these words: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James addresses our biggest challenge: practicing with our lives what we proclaim with our lips. In every paragraph, he reminds us that when we are walking in step with the Holy Spirit, we will not be wearing out the seat of our pants, but the soles of our shoes. Vandag is ons 2 000 jaar van Jakobus se skrywe verwyder, maar sy brief bly vir ons net so relevant soos die internet se oggendnuus. Paul wrote: “We have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live” (vv. 12-13 NIV). Obligation: it isn’t your favourite word, is it? That’s because we interpret it in a negative light. Don’t think of it as something you have to do but as something you get to do. Our greatest obligation doubles as our greatest opportunity—surrendering our lives to the lordship of Christ. Can you think of any greater privilege than being used by God to help fulfill His eternal purposes? The word “obligation” means to be legally or morally bound, and the best picture might be marriage. When you say, “I do,” at the altar, you are obligating yourself “for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part.” And when we enter into a covenant relationship with God through the new birth, two things happen. We are legally and morally bound to Him, and He is legally and morally bound to us. The gospel demands that we give all of ourselves to God. But when we do, God gives all of Himself to us. Think of the benefits of such a trade-off! You’ll never get a better deal. The trade-off also gives full veto power to the Holy Spirit. But once again, that’s a good obligation. Why? Fire alarms have an internal switch, triggered by a beam of light. As long as the light is received unbroken by the photosensitive receiver, the detector is quiet. But if smoke, moisture, or an insect obstructs the beam for even a split second, the alarm sounds. Paying attention to that alarm can make the difference between life or death. And your conscience works on the same principle. When sin obstructs the connection between you and God, your conscience signals that something’s wrong. At that moment you should thank God for helping you to feel good about feeling bad. Only a fool would turn off the alarm or develop the ability to sleep through it. While certain things aren’t ‘wrong’ in themselves, they may be wrong for you because of the future God has in mind. That means there are things others can do that you can’t. So instead of being stubborn, rejoice in the knowledge that God has great things in store for you. A French proverb says, ‘There is no pillow so soft as a clear conscience.’ Listening to your conscience will keep you from going the wrong way. And if you decide to plough on regardless, your conscience will keep you from being at ease with your decision. Always ask yourself this question and you’ll make the right decision: ‘How will doing this affect my confidence towards God?’ The Bible says, ‘…If our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence towards God. Paulus het geskryf: ‘Daarom dan, broers, staan ons onder ‘n verpligting, maar nie teenoor ons sondige natuur om daarvolgens te lewe nie. As julle julle lewe deur die sondige natuur laat beheers, gaan julle die dood tegemoet, maar as julle deur die Gees ‘n einde maak aan julle sondige praktyke, sal julle lewe’ (verse 12-13 AFR83). Verpligting is nie ’n gewilde woord nie. Dis omdat ons dit in ‘n negatiewe lig interpreteer. Moenie daaraan dink as iets wat jy moet doen nie, maar as iets wat jy kry om te doen. Ons grootste verpligting is ook ons grootste geleentheid - om ons lewens aan die heerskappy van Christus oor te gee. Kan jy aan enige groter voorreg dink as om deur God gebruik te word om sy ewige voornemens te vervul? Die woord ‘verpligting’ beteken om wettiglik of moreel gebonde te wees. Die beste voorbeeld daarvan is moontlik die huwelik. Wanneer julle by die altaar: ‘Ja,’ sê, verbind julle julself om in goeie en slegte tye, in rykdom en armoede en in siekte en gesondheid aan mekaar getrou te bly, tot die dood julle skei. Wanneer ons deur die nuwe geboorte ‘n verbondsverhouding met God aangaan, gebeur twee dinge. Ons word wettiglik en moreel aan Hom verbind en Hy word wettiglik en moreel aan ons verbind. Die evangelie vereis dat ons alles van onsself aan God oorgee. Wanneer ons dit doen, gee God ook alles van Homself aan ons oor. Dink aan die voordele van so ‘n verbintenis! Most success stories begin as an idea in someone’s mind. And God is the giver of good ideas. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights” (James 1:17 NKJV). God imparts wisdom and knowledge to those who are humble enough to seek His guidance. His promise is: “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Robert Chesebrough had a product in which he believed wholeheartedly. In fact, it was his own invention. Chesebrough had transformed the ooze that forms on shafts of oil rings—rod wax—into a petroleum jelly that he personally found to have great healing properties. He believed so much in the healing aspects of his creation that he became his own “experimental subject.” To demonstrate the benefits of his product for others, he burned himself with acid and flame. He cut and scratched himself so often and so deeply that he bore scars of his tests for his entire life. Nevertheless, Chesebrough proved his point, and people were convinced. They only had to look at his wounds and how they were healed to see the value of his product, which is still an international bestseller. We know it as Vaseline. What do you see in your future? Jou gewete werk op dieselfde beginsel. Wanneer sonde die verbinding tussen jou en God verbreek, stuur jou gewete ‘n alarm dat iets verkeerd is. Slegs ‘n dwaas sal die alarm net afskakel of die vermoë om deur die alarm te slaap, ontwikkel. Alhoewel sekere dinge nie op sigself ‘verkeerd’ is nie, kan dit vir jou as gevolg van die toekoms wat God in gedagte het, verkeerd wees. Dit beteken daar is dinge wat ander kan doen wat jy nie kan nie. Dus, in plaas daarvan om koppig te wees, verbly jou in die wete dat God groot dinge vir jou in gedagte het. ‘n Franse spreekwoord sê: ‘Daar is geen kussing so sag soos ‘n skoon gewete nie.’ Om na jou gewete te luister sal jou daarvan weerhou om die verkeerde pad te loop. As jy egter besluit om ongeag voort te ploeter, sal jou gewete jou daarvan weerhou om gemaklik met jou besluit te wees. Are you ready to grab your sword of faith and behead the giant in your life? Your best strategy will always be to attack a giant before it has a chance to get the best of you. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.” And you can do it! “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV). Whether real or imagined, all threats are perceived as having the potential for loss. It may be the loss of your income, your health, your position, a desired relationship, etc. Freedom begins when you stop and make an honest confession of the loss you really fear. Identifying and acknowledging your real fears will be a giant step toward breaking free from them. To do this, you must go through the process of peeling the “fear onion” to get to the core of your anxiety. And you may have to peel back a lot more layers than expected. David didn’t wait for the giant to come to him. “David ran quickly…to meet him.” Get your problem out into the open, confront it, develop a plan for overcoming it, and remember that God is with you and will enable you to conquer it. Of all the items in your monthly budget, giving to God should be your top priority—not just a priority, but your first and highest one. The Israelites were largely an agricultural people. With that in mind, read this wonderful promise that God made to them and claim it: “Honour the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine” (vv. 9-10 NIV). Notice the words “the firstfruits of all.” That means before you pay the mortgage or buy groceries or pay other bills, the very first check you need to write is to God. Here’s why: If you wait until other expenses are met first, it will impact the bottom line of your giving. That’s just the way it works with priorities. Whatever you place first will take precedence over everything that comes after it. Generosity should be the primary impetus behind your giving plan. And your generosity tends to be highest, immediately after receiving provision. Waiting until that provision has dwindled and been reduced by your monthly obligations has a tendency to squash generosity. However, if you prioritize your giving, then everything else will take its proper place in line behind the priority of God’s work. Honour God with the first portion of your income instead of giving Him the leftovers. That means when you get your paycheck, write a check for God’s portion first. Then use what is left to meet your own needs, such as paying bills or buying groceries. The sermon tackles Joshua’s sharp warning—"You will not be able to serve Yahweh" (Joshua | 24:19)—stripping away human self-reliance and pointing to our need for a internal transformation. We reflect on Joshua and Caleb's legacy of standing as a truthful minority against popular fear and falsehood, anchored in the reality that all a believer needs is the presence of Yahweh.
Ultimately, the three burials at the end of Joshua point us beyond earthly leaders to Jesus Christ—the true and Greater Joshua who died, rose from the dead, and secured our eternal inheritance.
