Breaking the Stigma: Khanyiswa's HIV Story

In this episode of Makhanda Diaries, we sit down with Khanyiswa from Makhanda. She's living with HIV, and she's here to share her story, from the moment she found out, to the fear of disclosure, to finding the courage to live out loud.
Khanyiswa takes us inside her journey. The diagnosis that changed everything. The secret she carried. The fear of being judged, of being rejected, of being seen as less than. But also, the people who showed up for her. The support that helped her keep going. The day she decided she wouldn't be silenced anymore.
This is a story about stigma. About courage. About the right to be seen and loved exactly as you are. Website · TikTok

Anthems of the Youth is not only a podcast episode but a statement. It listens closely to the music that once moved crowds and the sounds shaping today’s generation. In South Africa, protest music has a profound legacy of resistance, and acts both as a unifying tool for liberation during Apartheid and continues to perform this purpose in contemporary South Africa. Somewhere between the past and the present, something shifts in tone, voice and purpose. Through panel discussions, complex packages and informative interactions, this episode aims to find out whether protest is still loud, collective and unmistakable or has it taken on a new form altogether.

The results are out. Some made it. Many didn't. Now what? In this episode of Makhanda Diaries, we step into the real, unfiltered lives of young people in Makhanda navigating life after high school. Through raw audio diaries from learners at Assumption Development Centre, honest street stories from those inside the system and those left outside, and a candid conversation with a counsellor about the emotional toll no one mentions, we explore the anxiety, the hope, the fear, and the hustle. This is not a fairytale. This is what happens when Plan A fails, when the money isn't there, and when you're sitting at home while your friends are in lectures. If you've ever asked yourself "What now?" this one is for you. Website · TikTok

In this episode of Right on Cue, we journey into how art acts as a vessel for
intergenerational storytelling and the transmission of culture through music.
We begin with Sweetie Darling, a classical romcom brought to life by the
versatile Bongani Mbatha. Next, we have UNSUNG, a moving musical
theatre production from Buffalo City, blending choreography, music, and
true stories to honour one of Africa’s great liberation icons.
We then take you to a stirring choir performance that follows rehearsals
with Dumza Maswana. Captivated by their harmonies, we hear from
conductor Kepa, choir member Phumelela Tsili, and long-time supporter
Praise Mathebula. Adding to that, the National Arts Festival hosted its first
Igwijo competition for performers under the age of 21. The event included
performances by The Soil, gospel artist Bethusile Mcinga, and was hosted by
comedian Vusi Oulik. And last but not least we have the acclaimed drummer
Sphelelo “Lelo” Mazibuko who steps into the spotlight with his debut album,
FACES. Whether it’s music, drama, or the stories that connect us, Right on
Cue brings you what matters most with heart, humour, and homegrown

This podcast episode takes listeners on a reflective journey through the evolution of education in South Africa, comparing the past and present experiences of students across generations. Hosted by Uyanda Khumalo and featuring guest speaker Erin Arends, the conversation explores how apartheid-era policies like the Bantu Education Act shaped limited educational opportunities for Black South Africans, contrasted with the increasing access and technological advancements of today.
Listeners will hear powerful personal stories from esteemed academics like Dr Sizwe Mabizela and Professor Ingrid Schudel, as well as current Rhodes University students sharing their perspectives on navigating higher education today. From struggles with financial pressure and maintaining a social life to gratitude for progress made, the episode thoughtfully unpacks the complex realities of learning then and now.
Through these intergenerational voices, the show highlights both progress and persistent challenges in the education system, fostering empathy, understanding, and a deeper appreciation for the resilience of South African students past and present.
